Rod Profile - 7’ 3wt S2 Traveler

Completed in April, this S2 Uni blank from Rodmaker247 is a medium-fast action fiberglass rod which will be most at home on small creeks or on the panfish ponds. This rod features classic aesthetics which many might find reminiscent of a flamed bamboo rod. Uplocking nickel reel seat with a classic American Walnut insert matches the demure, but timeless looks of this rod. The grip was turned in shop out of AAA Flor grade cork into a unique reverse half-wells grip which tapers flat in the back and features an aggressive well for the caster’s thumb. This handle accommodates hands of all sizes and feels comfortable tossing dry flies no matter the grip. Finished with chestnut-colored primary wraps and canary yellow accents.

This proprietary taper from Shane Gray’s Rodmaker247 is available for builders to start from scratch or you can grab a Ready-to-Wrap kit which includes all the necessary components to build your very own Traveler glass rod. The Traveler series is available in 2-5wts.

The Traveler has a bit more parabolic flexibility than other 7’0” 3wt rods which I have built recently. I found the rod very comfortable to cast during a quick session on the lawn where I was trying out fly lines. I tried a few different lines and while I could reach out to 35-40ft with a double taper line the rod felt much better with a standard weight forward line.
